Phonics & Early Reading

We believe that ‘high quality phonic work’ is an important means for teaching children how to read and spell. At Egloskerry we use the National Strategy ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme to teach children phonics. Letters and Sounds enable children to see the relationship between reading and spelling from an early stage - the teaching of one reinforces the understanding of the other.

Progression and Pace

The Letters and Sounds Programme is divided into six phases. However the boundaries between the phases are not fixed. Guided by reliable assessments of the children’s developing knowledge and skills, teachers judge the rate at which their children are able to progress through the phases and adapt the pace accordingly.

Pronunciation of sounds

Listen to the 42 letter sounds of Jolly Phonics, spoken in British English. Each letter sound is clearly spoken twice, before an example word is given. Perfect for parents, teachers and children who aren't sure how to pronounce the letter sounds. The importance of correct pronunciation is vital in helping children with the blending process of reading.

Tricky/Sight words

It is important for children to learn their tricky words by sight. Tricky words are not decodable using phonics alone as they have spellings that do not show grapheme-phoneme correspondence. They are called common exception words in the KS1 Spelling Curriculum. Letters and Sounds sets out high-frequency words (including tricky words) to be taught within each phase. You can use the videos below to help your children read and spell the tricky words or you can download the word document to use as flashcards.
